Living in the "big city" is exhausting in so many ways. Subways. Pigeons. Taxis. Apartments. Small apartments. Small apartments with no closets. Looking for apartments. It all comes down to, well, apartments. Although I love my curent space, there is a lack of walls (yes, I said it, walls) and of course closets. One HUGE issue with moving is always furniture for me. You buy furniture to fit your current space, your lease ends, you move (because of the lack of walls or closets or whatever else is the issue with that place) and you have to try to shove your stuff into the new place. In the last 7 years, I have moved 5 times. Thats 5 different living rooms. We are talking 5 different bedrooms. Closets, no closets. Square, rectangle. You name it, I've lives it (no kitchen anyone?). I have been in this current place since Sept 2011 (which is a loooooong time for me) and I have this couch I ADORE. I had her made for a TINY place I lived in (in a basement) but it doesn't go in the living room anymore, so she has been residing in my room for a while. BUT its a complete waste of space. I need a desk, badly (imagine me crouched over on the couch crafting and designing on my little laptop, not cute!). BUT who wants to spend MORE MONEY on MORE FURNITURE for it just not to fit in the next place?! NOT I!
Ok- now that I rambled on way too long about furniture, what's the solution? IKEA. They do have some nice stuff, but really, its generic and impersonal, but at the end of the day (or a lease) you can really toss it if need be, but you can also make it yours and buy the right pieces.
Instead of buying a complete desk, for $50 I snatched up this baby. Green, eh. Well, it's actually my favorite color, but doesn't go so much in my room with these. I then grabbed up 2 adjustable legs at $3.50 each and a tabletop for $19.99. The thing is, this storage piece doens't have to stay with the desk, it can be used as just storage, in any room, when I move. #WINNING. The legs are uber cheap, and the tabletop too! Ok- so now what. It's so bore-snore. Ima make a nicey. Grab some paint and some fabric and let's get cookin.
Because the surface is super glossy, give it 2 quick coats of primer, allowing it to dry completely between coats.
I was going to try to spray paint it, but I have no luck with spray paint. Its messy, and I have little patience to le it dry, so let's stick to fabric. Wrap it around to cover and use a staple gun to get it tightly in place. Another PRO of fabric, you can change it, easily! I ave some serious ADD when it comes to, well, life, so knowing I can easily change the pattern out is a super PLUS!
The tabletop rests on top of the piece, and the 2 legs are on the other side!
After the primer dried, I gave it 2 complete coats of CHALKBOARD PAINT, because I am obsessed with it.
I also painted one door of my (also IKEA) closet with the chalk board paint to spruce it up a bit.
Done mind the mess on top of the desk (and dresser), I'm working on it! Look how lovely it matches the dresser we redid months ago!
And you still get a POP of color when you open it up (or you could paint it, I'm just a bittttt too lazy, I gots things to do!
So there you have it, for about 80 bones, we have a personalized piece tat is versatile enough to move to a new (hopefully not smaller!) place in the future! Have you ever spruced a cheap-o piece like this?
